Less is More Anthology Project

web site

The “Less is More” anthology project is a collaborative arts experiment bringing together 20 emerging writers and photographers/visual artists to re-imagine “poverty” as both a concept and a lived reality in order to challenge how we think of affected groups and communities.
Interested writers and artists are invited to submit up to 2 pages of work on any topic for consideration. If selected to participate, all writers and artists must attend 6 free craft/revision workshops in East Toronto from May – June 2018 in order to prepare anthology submissions for print publication. Workshops will be scheduled to accommodate participant availability.

The anthology will be printed by Sick City Press and launched in October 2018 with a companion documentary filmed alongside project workshops. All contributors will be featured in this documentary and it will be shown at multiple screenings open to the public after an official launch event in Scarborough.

Half of all proceeds from the sale of the print anthology will be divided amongst all contributors as compensation for submissions. The other half will be used to provide free literary arts programming for youth and adults in underserved communities.

Submitting writers and artists must be between 16 and 34 years old to give local young talent a much-needed professional development opportunity. We also encourage participation from marginalized groups, as they are often disproportionately affected by urban poverty.

What We’re Looking For:
Innovative flash fiction, short stories, essays, prose poetry, photo essays, twitter poems, comic strips, interviews/reviews, political cartoons, inventive memes, dramatic monologues, sketches/illustrations, rap lyrics, poetry disguised as humour or humour disguised as poetry, etc., etc.

Deadline for submission is MARCH 31, 2018. Selected participants will be notified by APRIL 15, 2018.

But please only submit up to a MAXIMUM of 2 pages. These submissions will be used for selection, but they will not be used in the final print anthology. Submissions will be evaluated for style, substance, innovation, and artistic merit. For examples of what we’re looking for, click here. Participants will craft anthology submissions over the two-month period mentioned above.
